Advantages of Swatch Card
More Efficient Display Space
Fabric swatch cards allow you to minimize the volume of display space you need to use. This is highly beneficial for small retail spaces. It is also beneficial if you want to make more room to display other items for sale in your store.
Allowing the Customer to Feel the Products
Fabric swatch cards and fabric swatch binders allow customers to feel the products, which is so important. Without these swatches, you may have to attempt to describe the fabric to a prospective customer, which can be difficult. The distinctions between different fabrics can be hard to explain verbally.
Displaying and Selling More Fabric
You can display more fabric with swatches, even in a limited space. This can reduce the complexity of the options available for your customers. Instead of going from aisle to aisle looking at fabric options, your customer can review fabric swatch binds or books. This provides a less strenuous method of reviewing products that can lead to more sales.
More Efficient Marketing and Sales
You can provide your customers with accurate fabric samples remotely through sample swatches compiled in a book or pamphlet of some kind. This will help your business in terms of marketability and efficiency.
Protecting Fabric from Damage
Through fabric swatch cards, you can keep the actual product made of fabric out of the reach of hands that can touch and potentially damage it.
More Accurate Representation of Product Features
With fabric swatch cards or fabric swatch binders, you can help ensure your customers receive an accurate representation of your products in terms of appearance, colors, and feel. This is important for customer satisfaction.
One of the challenges many businesses face is how to show material samples to customers. It is difficult to explain a texture or to help people to visualize how different patterns, colors, fabrics, paints, or any other materials go together.
One of the easiest and most convenient ways to accomplish this is through the use of swatch cards. Working with an established swatch card manufacturer allows you to customize the look of the card to ensure it conveys just the message or the ideas you want to share.
For designing interior spaces, working with a swatch card manufacturer to create the right types of cards is ideal for future sales and marketing. In strategically designing the cards to add colors, options, patterns, features, and even textures on one page, customers can see the difference between options.
Most swatch cards are designed as a panel. These can include one or more panels, with up to five panels. There may also be a hundred or more samples per side on dual sided cards, making these very practical for displaying large selections and options.
Typically, the cards are placed in a binder. However, they can also be displayed in stands or on counters or tables to make it easy for customers to see a wide selection of options at one time.
One common way to market a higher quality fabric or material is to use swatch cards that include a feeler or a with a waterfall arrangement. This allows customers to be able to see and feel both sides of the material and the different quality of options available in one convenient and central location.

How to Make Fabric Swatch Cards

Cut cardstock or comic book boards into 1.75" x 1.5" chips.
Write fabric names on the bottom of the card. Alternatively, you could use your rotary cutter and cut the names out of the swatch book. I like my handwriting though, so I chose to handwrite the names onto the cards. I wrote ALL of the names on the individual cards before moving onto the next step. To stay organized, I wrote down one row at a time making sure to keep everything in the right order. I just made sure to keep all of my stacks in line.
GENTLY peel the fabric swatch from the book. The edges may curl up a bit so I liked to press it flat. At this point, I worked down each row and did one fabric swatch at a time. Again, making sure to keep everything in the same order.
Add a thin layer of glue to the front of your color chip covering the most of the surface area above where the name is written. Gently press the fabric swatch onto the glue. Fold the fabric swatch over the card and glue down the backside as well. I personally did not have any issues with discoloration of the fabric. As long as you use a thin layer of glue with no clumps, there shouldn't be any issues. However, if this is a concern for you, double sided tape works here too! Just do a strip of tape on the front and back.
Give your new fabric swatch card and quick press (front and back) with a hot iron to help set the glue.
Add a magnet to the back.
Attach to magnetic board and admire!
Tips for Placing Swatch Card in the Best Place in a Swatch Book
Creating a well-designed fabric swatch book is critical for both your sales team as well as for your customers. Choosing how to place the various fabrics and swatches in the book will have an impact on how people perceive the different samples and the possibilities for the use of the fabric or material in their home or commercial building.
There are different ways to set up fabric swatch books. Using a system that works well to identify fabrics by materials, colors, patterns, or other criteria is always a simple option. There are other organizational tips to consider if you are working with an interior designer or a coordinator/decorator.
Grouping Like Fabrics
A common way to organize swatch books is by fabric or material type. This is a good option if you have specific fabric type requests. Grouping similar fabric types and then breaking it down by colors is even specific, allowing a customer or a sales professional to immediately find the right section of the book to allow customers to see options.
Patterns or textures can also be grouped together. For example, all paisleys could be in one section of a swatch book, while all velvet swatches could be in another. This is often a good choice if the customer is choosing a single item.
Grouping Complementary Fabric Options
Waterfall or island types of pages in a fabric swatch book is a wonderful way to display fabrics that compliment or contrast with each other. For interior designers or decorators, this creates a concept on a page. The customer can easily see how different patterns, colors, and even textures and types of fabrics look when used together.
The Benefits of Swatch Cards to Present Material Recommendations
There are many different ways to allow customers to touch, see, and experience different types of fabrics and materials. Swatch cards are larger than swatch tags but smaller in size than a swatch blanket, which allows them to show more of a larger pattern while still being cost-effective and easier to send to customers.
The one consideration for a swatch card is the smaller size can make it difficult to display the full effect of large patterned fabrics.
As swatch memo manufacturers, part of our role is to make it easy for your customers and sales staff to identify the fabric or material. We create a printed ticket that can be attached to the fabric to make identification and ordering simple and easy.
While some swatch card manufacturers offer limited options in preparing the swatch memos, we work closely with our clients to find the ideal packaging and display options. This includes bulk-packing, banding, creating stack books or developing ring sets to use with binders.

Swatch card Look and Feel: Matching Your swatch card to Your Brand
Logo Or Wordmark
The difference between a logo and a wordmark is that a logo is a graphic representation and a wordmark is simply a company/product name written in a specific way. Regardless of which your company decides to use, either will stand as the heart of your identity.
Key Colors
Most often, businesses choose one or two colors to represent their brand; however, there are examples of more complex brands that incorporate more. More than likely, you’ll hire a company to design your logo/wordmark (unless you have a graphic designer in house). That way you can ensure that you can match any marketing material to these colors.
Know Your Fonts
When deciding how you want your brand’s words to look, it’s best to choose just a select few fonts to use. Many companies choose these fonts from those used in their logo, but this isn’t universal. Otherwise, the fonts you choose should complement the typeface of your logo. This will convey a sense of unity across your brand identity. Be sure to provide these typefaces when you hire companies to do any sort of promotional materials or other designs—including any swatch cards you may have made.
Texture
The texture you choose for your swatch card sends more messages than just the obvious colors and images. Consider you’re in a “tough’ industry like construction or lawn care. A heavy-duty swatch card with a textured feel will support your brand message while also helping users keep a grip. For companies in industries like technology, a smooth, shiny texture will give a “sleek” feel to your materials.
Sturdiness
For industries where a swatch card could be exposed to temperature extremes (both hot and cold), choose a poly swatch card because vinyl can crack at low temperatures and sag at high temperatures. Poly swatch cards are a good fit for the medical industry because they tend to be very stain resistant and are easy to sterilize. Likewise, they can also be helpful in industries where they’re likely to be dropped or thrown about.
How to Make an Impression with Custom Swatch Cards
Use High Quality Images
In today’s visually driven society, making a good first impression is imperative. Proving visually stimulating presentation materials is the best way to accomplish this. Visually rich swatch cards are a great way to cast your company in the best light. swatch cards are a great venue for visual marketing because they can be fully customized to your company’s exact specifications and all of your client’s needs by using high quality, full color images.
Foil Stamping And/or Embossing
To provide additional design elements that make your swatch card stand out, consider adding embossed or foil stamped components to your swatch card. By embossing, you’ll add a textile feature to your swatch card that your clients can actually feel. For instance, foil stamping can be used to provide a metallic effect, which increases the visibility of your presentation materials.
The Benefit Of Simplicity
Although it may be tempting to load your swatch card with a ton of visuals and embossed/stamped elements, it’s also important to remember that the simplest designs often have the biggest impact. In order for a simple design to have such power, it is important to use high quality visuals and proper use of negative space. Doing so will show your clients that your company has a strong, clear focus and, when well designed and developed, can help your material stand out from others.
Accessories Can Help
Last but not least, just like the right purse or tie can make an outfit, adding that extra little accessory to your presentation swatch card can work to win over your clients in a big way. Such accessories include colored index tabs, pockets for storing documents, business card holders and more. Paying attention to the details show prospective clients and customers that you mean business about doing business with them.
